ABOUT THIS TOOL

What Character & word counter helps you do

A submission form may limit characters while an API limits bytes. Compare the visible length of your text with its encoded size before you submit it.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your text.
  2. Choose Calculate to see each count.
  3. Copy the counts or download a TXT report.

Input and output example

INPUT
A😀 B
OUTPUT
4 characters with spaces · 3 without spaces · 7 UTF-8 bytes

Supported formats and limits

  • Maximum input: 1 MiB of UTF-8 text.
  • Visible characters use Intl.Segmenter where available. Older browsers fall back to Unicode code points.

How the result is calculated

CRLF and CR are normalized to LF for character and line counts; UTF-8 bytes use the original input. Excluding spaces removes Unicode whitespace and line breaks. Words use English-locale Intl.Segmenter word-like segments, with a whitespace fallback. Sentences split at . ! ? 。 ! ? and count a remaining nonempty fragment.

Frequently asked questions

Does one emoji count as one character?

On supported browsers, a joined visual sequence such as a family emoji counts as one grapheme. Unicode code points are also shown separately.

Why can a submission form show a different count?

A form may count UTF-16 units, encoded bytes or line endings differently. Check the receiving service’s stated rules.
